Q1: the composition, in more depth
Worth 20 marks — a quarter of the entire written paper on one answer — the composition rewards planning more than any other question. You'll usually get 5–6 topics to choose from, spanning different genres:
Tell a story — build it around a clear turning point, not just a sequence of events.
Paint a scene or person — lean on specific sensory detail, not generic adjectives.
Take a clear side and defend it — a wavering answer loses marks even if well written.
Write from personal experience — examiners reward honest, specific reflection over generic morals.
Explain or discuss a topic from multiple angles — structure matters more than opinion here.
Using the two hours (and the 15 minutes before them)
Reading time (15 min): skim all five questions so nothing is a surprise later, read the comprehension passage carefully — this is your only real chance to read it slowly — and lock in your composition topic and a rough plan.
A workable time split across 2 hours: composition ~45 min, comprehension ~30 min, letter ~20 min, grammar ~25 min, leaving a few minutes to check over your answers — composition especially, since a rushed ending undercuts an otherwise strong answer.
Attempt questions in whatever order keeps you calm and confident — many students do the letter first since it's the most mechanical, then composition while fresh, saving grammar for last since it needs the least sustained focus.
